The castle, high above the city, was built on the southernmost of the lesser Carpathian mountains. It is rectangular in shape, with a tower at each corner. It is open to the public, and houses the National Museum and the National Government offices. The castle is thought by some to look like an ‘upturned table’. It has often been attacked and captured, and was destroyed by fire in 1811, but was rebuilt, to the original plans, between 1953 and 1965. From the castle there are views of the Old Town and the asymmetrical suspension bridge over the Danube, with it’s Bystrica restaurant which perches on top of the structure high above the river.
